The Place of Foreign Names in Our Lives

The Place of Foreign Names in Our Lives

In order not to be indifferent to some events, it is a more effective method to chant or react verbally than to react verbally. We took a step in this direction and established the BRAND NAME INSTITUTE ASSOCIATION (İSİMDER) in 2013 in order to put our reaction against foreign names in our country and to guide in the right field. Under the umbrella of our association, we are working to examine and develop similar naming efforts, whether they are brand names, child names, or concepts used in signs.

Our work focuses on information, education, guidance and constructiveness rather than a dry criticism. While creating new brand names, we are trying to make Turkish brands around the world by coming to the fore with our Turkish without being influenced by foreign languages. We encourage our businessmen to produce Turkish brands. However, we recommend producing brands that are conscious, compatible with official, legal and universal communication criteria. In other words, the concepts that are normal for us may cause misunderstandings in other languages. Considering these, we try to create Turkish brands globally and encourage our businessmen to work in this direction.

There are some problems with foreign signage in our country along with foreign brands. Especially in some metropolitan cities, workplaces have been invaded by foreign signs, mostly in English. The fact that foreign words are dominant is not only welcomed by our citizens but also damages our country's image in the international arena. Because especially the intensive use of English words and brands arouses the perception of a colonial country. It puts the country's own culture and national identity on the second plan. Some municipalities impose sanctions to prevent unconscious use of foreign names. The main thing is to create and use alternative Turkish brand names by avoiding foreign brands yet. Especially as soon as we enter a foreign word in our language, the concepts of Turkish should be found and the concepts should be translated into Turkish.

Recently, a new problem in our country is that our Syrian guests take part in the business life and our bazaars become a cosmopolitan state. In some shops, both Turkish and Arabic names are written, while others prefer to write only Arabic. This situation both creates problems in communication and attracts the reaction of our citizens. It is seen that foreign names are used extensively in our touristic cities and districts. In this way, it is not possible to prevent applications with only prohibitions and sanctions. According to these practices, regulations, standards should be established. Signs and procedures should be determined before hanging signs, and names should be used according to the standards. Since our official language is Turkish, signboards should be created in Turkish and other languages should be placed in an explanation and translation manner. We believe that foreign names will not be a problem as long as Turkish names and brands are prioritized. As the management of the Turkish Name Institute, we continue our efforts to protect and improve our Turkish, and our door is open to all our citizens who have a passion for Turkish.
